Es gibt Fotos, mein Großvater als Zweijähriger und ich der Autor, selber zwei Jahre alt zusammen mit meinem Großvater. Unsere Kleinkind-Aussehen ist so verblüffend ähnlich, dass es wohl anzunehmen ist, dass es viele Parallelen in unserem Leben gibt; zweifellos hat er seine Gene vererbt.
Der rote Faden beginnt 1928 mit Theodor Trampler, meinem Großvater aus Leipzig und endet 2018, 90 Jahre später mit der Fertigstellung dieses Buches durch mich, seinen Enkel. Es ist ein Dokument über die Suche nach Arbeit, seiner Zeit in New York und seine Eindrücke vom Leben vor Ort. Eine Zeit, die schnelllebig zu werden begann. Mein Großvater erlebte die erste Zeppelin-Atlantiküberquerung, sah die Konfettiparade, als die Piloten der „Bremen” empfangen wurden – die erste Flugzeugüberquerung ( mit einer Junkers) von Europa nach Amerika. Seine Kommunikation war der handgeschriebene Brief, in Sütterlin geschrieben. Für mich war dies allerdings eine Herausforderung, da diese altdeutsche Schrift nicht mehr gelehrt und geschrieben wird. Über einige Wochen habe ich die Buchstaben und Textzusammenhänge erlernt. Diese Briefe wurden mit dem Schiff über den Atlantik transportiert und Neuigkeiten waren damit schon Wochen alt, als sie in Leipzig bei seiner Frau Martha und seinen Kindern Gretel und Lisa ankamen. Über 100 Briefe schrieb Theodor in den 15 Monaten in New York nach Hause und genau so viele an seine Eltern und Freunde. Diese Briefe spiegeln den Eindruck eines Arbeitsemigranten und Sozialdemokraten wider, der wegen Heimweh und Heimatliebe dann doch nach Deutschland zurückkehrte und auch dort blieb, nichts ahnend, was ab 1933 folgen sollte.
Dieses Buch ist ein Tagebuch, eine Biographie, ein Fotobuch. Es ist ein Zeitzeugnis mit den alten Fotografien meines Großvaters, 1928/1929 vom ihm auf seinen Erkundungstouren mit dem Fahrrad durch die Stadt aufgenommen. Dieses Fahrrad brachte er von Leipzig mit nach New York, um mobil zu sein und etwas von der Stadt und dem Land zu sehen. Seine Leidenschaft fürs Radfahren, wie auch für das Fotografieren, hat er mir vererbt.
Die historischen Fotos von 1928/1929 erzählen eine authentische Geschichte von Deutschen in New York City. Nicht eine Reihe von Skyline-Klischees, aber dafür echtes Leben und Arbeiten in einem fremden Land. Mein Großvater war Buchbinder und arbeitete, um zu überleben und seine Familie zu versorgen, sparte jeden Cent für sie. Er fotografierte und dokumentierte das Leben in New York, verkaufte seine Fotos in Amerika und Deutschland.
Ich habe mit der fragilen Verwundbarkeit des Themas New York, seine und meine Fotos ausgesucht, immer bedacht auch nicht in Clichés abzurutschen. Das New York, das er sah, war nicht der hippe, glamouröse Ort, wie er in Zeitschriften oder in den Hollywood-Filmen dargestellt wurde und wird. New York war das Leben von anonymen Menschen, die jetzt hier ein Gesicht und eine Geschichte bekommen. Mein Großvater fühlte, dass er einen seelenvollen Blick auf die Stadt hatte, kritisch, aber auch mit Respekt. Viele kleine Details versuche ich ebenfalls in meiner Fotoauswahl beizusteuern, einige Male stelle ich damals und heute nebeneinander, eine einmalige Möglichkeit, Fotos in einem Abstand von mehr als 80 Jahren nochmals aus gleicher Perspektive aufzunehmen und zu betrachten. Manches erkennt man wieder, einiges existiert nicht mehr und war nur sehr schwer mit New Yorker „location scouts“ zu finden. Kurze Erklärungen zum Zeitgeschehen und im Kontext der Zeit sollen das Buch mit Informationen bereichern und auch den Blick ein wenig verändern. Die Recherche zu historischen Fakten haben mir ungeheuer viel Spaß gemacht. Einige Dokumente habe ich erst im 21. Jahrhundert unter vielen Erbstücken gefunden. Seit meiner ersten Reise 1988 nach New York fasziniert mich diese Stadt, wie Millionen anderer Menschen auch. Letzte Schriftstücke wie die „Application for Visa“ entdeckte ich erst Ende 2016.
Meine Beziehung zu New York ist eine sehr persönliche, da ich als Musikproduzent mit vielen New Yorker Künstlern zu tun habe. Deshalb ist nicht nur das Visuelle ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Buches.
Ich bin mit vielen New Yorkern im Austausch, arbeite seit mehr als zehn Jahren mit den verschiedensten Interpreten zusammen. Die beiliegende CD ist ein Ausdruck des Schmelztiegels New York. Gezielt habe ich einige Musiktitel ausgewählt, die bereits in den 20er Jahren entstanden sind, neu interpretiert, zeitlos und faszinierend. Ich konnte die auch in Europa bekannten New Yorker Musiker von Hazmat Modine dazu gewinnen, Songs beizusteuern oder etwa die großartige Entertainerin Rachelle Garniez dafür begeistern, zwei Hits der Jahre 1928/1929, als mein Großvater in der Stadt lebte, neu zu interpretieren.
Die Musik der CD zeugt von der Vielfältigkeit der Stadt.
Dazu gibt es eine Reihe von Originaldokumenten, die das Buch bereichern. Ich bin froh, dass mein Großvater als Buchbinder sowohl die Briefe als Buch gebunden, ein eigenes Fotoalbum angelegt hat und viele Dokumente sammelte und aufbewahrte. Er rettete sie durch die Wirren des zweiten Weltkriegs, übergab sie später seiner Tochter Gretel, damals neun Jahre alt, und letztendlich erbte ich sie als sein Enkel. Er verdiente sich Geld als Fotograf, verkaufte Hunderte von Bildern in Amerika, an die Leipziger Volkszeitung und die Arbeiterzeitung. Er nahm Aufträge von Emigranten an und vererbte seiner Familie Fotos, die das Buch erst ermöglichten.
New York ist ein New York von uns allen. Interessiert entweder als Tourist, als Künstler oder auch als Voyeur. Deshalb unterscheidet sich dieses Buch maßgeblich von allen anderen New York Büchern, fügt Facetten hinzu und kombiniert Dinge, die es so bisher nicht zusammen gegeben hat.
Deshalb ist New York Past & Present etwas sehr Persönliches und doch ein Buch für jedermann, ein Dokument und ein Zeugnis vom Leben im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert.

Joseph Daley
Joseph Daley was born in Harlem, August of 1949 less than two months a er my late wife Wanda. His parents were immigrants from the Island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. They loved America and considered it a great land of opportunity for those that were willing to work hard. His family did work hard and achieved many wonderful outcomes despite the difficult racial climate of the time.
Daley’s is a contemporary music, jazz, and improvisation artist, who studied at the Manhattan School of Music attaining a bachelor’s in performance and a master’s in music education. He has received fellowships in music composition from the National Endow- ment of the Arts, MacDowell Colony, Music Omi, and the Geraldine R Dodge Foundation.
Daley’s debut CD project, ‘ e Seven Deadly Sins’, was released in 2011 and has received international critical acclaim. Featuring his Earth Tones Ensemble, a full Jazz orchestra, this powerfully innovative music mines the same rich vein of musical expression as that of immortals like Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington and George Russell.

Rachelle Garniez
Native New Yorker multi-instrumentalist Rachelle Garniez has been described as a ‘diva with a difference’ (Billboard Magazine) and a ‘certified free spirit’ ( The New Yorker). Her performances are authentic, theatrical, spontaneous and fresh; stream-of-consciousness improvisations provide scope for the songs to evolve and develop continually as the spirit moves. She has released five CDs on her own label, Real Cool Records. She is a performing member and co-musical director of the Neo-Cabaret troupe The Citizens Band and plays in the acclaimed Roots-World ensemble Hazmat Modine and the Songbirds Collective. Her songs can be heard on many television programs and have been recorded by singers like Catherine Russell, Karen Elson, and Ingrid Lucia of the Flying Neutrinos, to name just a few. Since 2015 Rachelle works with JARO Medien and released two CDs on the label. Rachelle Garniez plays accordeon, claviola, vocals, piano.

Am I Blue? (Harry Akst and Grant Clarke) 1929, and was a great hit that year for Ethel Waters in the movie ‘On with the Show’. It has become a standard. | My Baby Just Cares for Me (Walter Donaldson/Gus Kahn) is a jazz standard. Written for the lm version of the musical comedy ‘Whoopee!’ (1930).
A stylized version of the song by Nina Simone, is the most famous version of this song.

Hazmat Modine
Hazmat Modine is a band in perpetual motion. To them, timelessness, innovation and inclusiveness trump the trendy and the ephemeral. The very definition of honest-to-goodness American roots music – but also considerably more global and exotic – Hazmat Modine is visually and aurally captivating, continually exploratory, and thoroughly engaging.
Formed in 1998 by Wade Schuman, who writes and sings nearly all of the band’s material and forges their creative direction, Hazmat Modine seamlessly integrates primal, guttural blues, funky, unadulterated old school R&B and myriad sounds from other cultures, absorbed during their constant touring in more than 35 different countries across the world. Steve Elson
Saxophonist and composer Steve Elson was born in California, but has spent the last four decades living and working in New York Citys Lower East Side, where his greatgrandparents landed a er emigrating from Eastern Europe. Best known for his over 30 year collaboration with rock icon David Bowie, Elson creates music informed by his rhythm and blues, jazz, klezmer, Latin, and rock influences. As well as performing and recording with hundreds of influential and innovative musicians from around the world, Elson was a co-founder of Slickaphonics (with Ray Anderson), the Borneo Horns and is a featured member of Hazmat Modine. He currently leads the creative ensemble Steve Elsons Lips and Fingers. More information can be found at steveelson.com.

The Meta Four feat. Robert Mayes
The Meta Four are four black female singers from the choir of the Universal Life Church in Chicago. The vocal quartet mixes the power that comes from the church with cosmic arrangements, leaving the genre boundary behind, without landing in the musical nowhere. That religious music could be employed for worldly ends is a neat reversal of Martin Luther’s famous remark, “Why should the devil have all the good tunes?” The gospel retort might be that if the world has the best tunes, the church has the best moves, rhythms, and voices. is may be because gospel is, above all, a music of testimony. The archetypal gospel phrase, “How I got over”, depicts the essential situation: the singer has suffered greatly, ‘abused, confused, misused’, mistreated by society (‘doors have been closed in my face’) and by loved ones (‘they smile in your face but cut your throat behind your back’). Yet she made it over, relying pretty much on sheer will-power and a self-confidence so clearly without visible support that it seems downright miraculous.
