Tribute to Satie – Johannes Cernota, Piano Solo

Erik Satie, with his unconventional and creative oeuvre, influenced the entire musical world. Popular music, jazz, as well as the avant-garde of contemporary music, often refer to him as an inspiration. John Cage once said: “Satie’s relevance is not up for debate. He is simply indispensable.”

Since the release of his LP/CD Johannes Cernota Plays Erik Satie in 1983, Johannes Cernota has become an internationally sought-after interpreter of this composer. In this concert, he presents works by Satie that can be regarded as early examples of minimal music, impressionistic ideas, and ambient music (musique d’ameublement).

The subsequent variations on these pieces offer a glimpse into Cernota’s work and life as a composer, pianist, and visual artist. Beyond his impressive piano playing, he captivates audiences with profound yet varied and often humorous program concepts: a repertoire that goes beyond the purely classical, enriched and enlivened by improvisations and interdisciplinary elements.
